CARING FOR HAIR EXTENSIONS
COLOR TREATMENT: KEEP YOUR HAIR SHINY & HEALTHY

How to care for Hair Extensions properly
Many shampoos have sulfate in them which is not good for any type of hair. What is Sulfate? Sulfate is an alcohol based detergent that dries natural cuticles. When wearing hair extensions or caring for your own natural hair make sure to keep away from sulfate based shampoos or conditioners. Organic shampoos are best or conditioners that clean hair as well as condition. Hair and scalp should be conditioned daily when wearing hair extensions as the scalp tends to dry out. I recommend an oil based clarifying shampoo like Olive Oil.
When cleaning hair extensions it is best to:
1. Condition your hair and scalp before and after shampoo
2. Shampoo your hair from the top to bottom
3. Apply a Growth Restoration Oil Stimulator to scalp and leave in for 2-10 minutes before conditioning
4. Condition from root to tip
5. Use plastic cap to let conditioner sit and warm hair under a dryer
6. Leave on cap for 30-45 mins
7. Rinse with cool water
8. It is best to let hair extensions air dry and use minimal hair heat appliances like hair dryers and hair irons as it tends to damage the hair cuticles, which cause split ends and increases hair extension shedding.
Always use extra care when combing hair extensions. I suggest buying a special hair extension brush. When hair is wet and/or extensions have grown out be especially careful when brushing making sure to be gentle.
The Hair Growth Cycle:
Hair growth goes through four stages: anagen, catagen, telogen and exogen. Every hair is at a different stage of the growth cycle. Shedding happens with all hair. Shedding and losing extensions is normal especially towards the end of 1-3 months. All hair sheds especially hair extensions so do not believe otherwise. To minimize hair shedding use conditioners and natural oils such as olive and coconut oil which will help maintain hair cuticles.

TIPS FOR STYLING HAIR WITH STYLING TOOLS

Do not style hair with heat daily.
Only use heating tools when absolutely necessary as heat tends to dry out hair. If your hair is colored or just naturally dry, you will have to trim your hair more and use conditioning treatments to help keep in thee moisture. Blow dryers and flat irons can make hair look crispy and create split ends if overused. The best rule of thumb is to blow out hair 3-5 times a week and try limiting your flat iron/curling iron usage to 1-2 times per week.
Always choose a correct size tool.
Doing this has more to do with styling your hair well than keeping it healthy. Think of a particular style and then choose the size of your styling tool before you buy. It is important to note that the size of your styling tool will also depend on how thick or think your hair is. If your hair is very fine then use a smaller flat iron (around 1″ should work well). For thicker hair a 1 1/2" flat iron should get the job done. Curling irons are usually 1″- 1 1/4.″ If you want springy curls that bend quite a few times, you may want to make sure that the hair wraps around the iron at least 3 times. If all you are looking for is a little flip and a soft wave, then the hair should wrap around the barrel 1.5-2 times.
Bangs should be blown dry instead of using a flat iron on them.
Always buy professional tools.
When buying curling irons, flat irons and/or blow dryers, you always want to buy one that is professional grade. Anything that uses a tourmaline plate or ceramic is good as they are much safer on hair. Professional tools tend to get hotter faster and stay very hot so don’t have to hold the hair in the barrel or go over it as many times with a flat iron. Also the barrels and plates are comfortable and easy to use.
Always, apply a heat protection styling product before styling. Just a little on the ends will go a long way in terms of protection. When flat ironing and curling, use a thermal protecting spray that has a little hold in it, or a very light-weight hold hairspray. Then, brush through the hair after ironing to give it a softer look. Just remember not to hold the hair in the clamp or iron for too long of a time period; it will burn your hair.
